We have seen the hygiene concern arise mainly with the large chains, it is irresponsible and it is misinformation.  In our experience the true concerns are lack of chain branding on the offered vessel and, we suspect, concerns over the long term impact of changes to the style and perhaps speed of service.

Starbucks is busy working toward recycling its cups, a great feat i it can pull it off, but it relies not only on consumers disposing of their cups appropriately ie into compost bins, but that all the communities in which Starbucks has served have commercial composting facilities. If they provided this facility in every place their coffee as sold for use by all it would be an awesome legacy...

I suspect the outcome will rely on our behaviour though and the decisions we make about our consumption, what we can keep and what we need to change to better enjoy the things we love.

I think that you are overlooking that coffee chains would prefer to reduce their expenditure on consumables.

Starbucks will always give you a discount if you bring your own cup - even if it has competitors branding on it. They prefer to use less cups and promote some sort of environmental awareness. However, Gloria Jeans will only give you a discount if you have a Gloria Jeans cup - and I have even had GJs refuse to use my keep cup because it didn't have their branding on it. Starbucks always takes my cup and always gives me a discount (at some other places I have had to ask why I haven't received the own-cup discount when it is clearly advertised within the store)
